NORTH End: Mystic, Appanoose County

Large Enough Supply Remains to Last Hundreds of Years, Survey Shows
— "Iowa Centennial Edition" of Centerville Daily Iowegian and Citizen, August 23, 1938

In 1910, Mystic (1920 pop. 2796, 2010 pop. 425) was the 64th-largest community in Iowa, in company with multiple county seats. But through the century and especially after 1950, it cratered. Its expansive city limits are a reminder of what was.

No later than 1960, the north end of IA 138 (the renumbered replacement) was Main Street at 3rd St, where the post office is.

There was a Des Moines Register rack nearby with a Sunday paper in it from April 17, 2009 ... but I was there on September 13, 2011.

SOUTH End: IA 3, now frontage road for IA 2, Appanoose County

In 1914, the corner was labeled Lanesville; in 1945, Sunshine. The left-behind segment is Sunshine Road. Northwest of here, the intersection of 168th Avenue and 495th Street is the extinct map dot of Brazil. (2019 aerial photo from USGS)
