{"id":13236,"date":"2021-08-23T10:00:45","date_gmt":"2021-08-23T15:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=13236"},"modified":"2021-08-16T00:21:18","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T05:21:18","slug":"school-timeline-mega-update-1990s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2021\/08\/school-timeline-mega-update-1990s\/","title":{"rendered":"School timeline mega-update: 1990s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13237\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/cambriaschool.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/cambriaschool.jpg 515w, https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/cambriaschool-300x149.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><br \/>\n<em><strong>June 22, 2014:<\/strong> The Wayne school district&#8217;s midyear closure of the school in unincorporated Cambria in December 1995 is a crucial link in a discovery I explained weeks ago: <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2021\/07\/a-notable-non-event-of-2020-21\/\">It contributed to a streak of closures<\/a> that predated the modern era and did not end until the 2020-21 school year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Between the newspaper searches and the IDOE databases, I believe I have upwards of 95% of all small-town closures in the past 30 years.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clay Central-Everly sharing has been corrected to 1990 (<em>Hartley Sentinel<\/em>, 12\/7\/89)<\/li>\n<li>Milford Township school, 2.5 miles east of the I-35\/E29 exit in Story County, was used by Nevada until 1991 (<em>Nevada Journal<\/em>, 5\/30\/91; <em>Ames Tribune<\/em>, 6\/22\/13)<\/li>\n<li>Pella closed Leighton and Otley in 1992 (<em>Pella Chronicle<\/em>, 4\/17\/92; IDOE database)<\/li>\n<li>Grandview\u2019s school closed in 1993 (<em>Wapello Republican<\/em>, 4\/15\/95, <a href=\"http:\/\/iagenweb.org\/louisa\/schools\/grandview-school_building.htm\">via IAGenWeb<\/a>), and I already had the building in Letts listed for this year. Big kudos to both the paper and IAGenWeb for doing and transcribing the series on Louisa County schools.<\/li>\n<li>Ryan\u2019s school closed in 1993 (<em>Manchester Press<\/em>, 10\/13\/92)\n<ul>\n<li>The building was less than 20 years old at the time. It was a replacement for one that was destroyed in a tornado on August 12, 1974.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The town of Bancroft <em>gained<\/em> public school students when St. John&#8217;s closed its middle school in 1993 (<em>Bancroft Register<\/em>, 3\/3\/93). The town only had kindergartners since its attachment to Swea City in 1968 (<em>Swea City Herald<\/em>, 3\/21\/68).
