The new school house is two stories and basement, entirely fireproof and in every way a model of its kind. It has its own waterworks and electric light and gas plant, and is lighted, heated and ventilated according to the most modern ideas.&#8221; \u2014 <\/em>Spencer Reporter<em>, January 25, 1922<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dana\u2019s school closed in 1975, based on its sudden absence (<i>The Globe-Free Press and Paton Portrait and Rippey News<\/i>, 6\/20\/74, 11\/7\/74, 8\/21\/75)\n<ul>\n<li>Speaking of consolidations, that newspaper title. Whoa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Northeast Hamilton closed both Kamrar and Williams in 1975 (<em>Webster City Daily Freeman-Journal<\/em>, 1\/14\/75)<\/li>\n<li>Pymosa Township, north of Atlantic on N16, closed in 1975 (<em>Atlantic News-Telegraph<\/em>, 5\/24\/75). It was built in 1955, became part of Atlantic in 1960, and\u00a0is one of a handful of Baby Boom-era outlying buildings in the state.<\/li>\n<li>South Hamilton closed both Ellsworth and Stanhope in 1976 (<em>DFJ<\/em>, 8\/23\/76) but not without a prolonged struggle with those towns\u2019 residents (<em>DFJ<\/em>, 5\/3\/77).<\/li>\n<li>Casey\u2019s school closed before the end of the 1975-76 school year when a new elementary in Adair opened (<em>Guthrie Center Times<\/em>, 3\/31\/76). Adair immediately tore down its old school (<em>Guthrian<\/em>, 10\/18\/76).<\/li>\n<li>Mitchell\u2019s school closed in 1976 (<em>Mitchell County Press-News<\/em>, 6\/17\/76). The community knew of the possibility, but got blindsided \u201cin a special unannounced meeting May 24\u201d when the Osage school district told teachers to start packing up their desks.<\/li>\n<li>Moneta\u2019s school closed in 1976 (<em>Hartley Sentinel<\/em>, 8\/6\/81)<\/li>\n<li>Wiota\u2019s school was torn down in 1976 (<em>Atlantic News-Telegraph<\/em>, 8\/30\/77). The gym was used for a few more years, but\u00a0I believe the school itself closed in 1963 upon reorganization with Anita.<\/li>\n<li>Aurora\u2019s school probably closed in 1977 (<em>Waterloo Courier<\/em>, 1\/26\/77; <em>Manchester Press<\/em>, 2\/2\/77)<\/li>\n<li>Buck Creek, a not-even-map-dot at the west intersection of D47 and X31 west of Hopkinton, closed in 1977 (<em>Manchester Press<\/em>, 5\/4\/77). Buck Creek was one of the districts involved in forming Maquoketa Valley in 1959 (<em>Manchester Democrat-Radio<\/em>, 3\/11\/58, 1\/12\/60; <em>Manchester Press<\/em>, 10\/9\/58)<\/li>\n<li>Carpenter\u2019s school probably closed in 1977 (<em>Mitchell County Press-News<\/em>, 5\/18\/77)<\/li>\n<li>Lone Rock\u2019s school closed in 1977 (<em>Kossuth County Advance<\/em>, 1\/17\/77)<\/li>\n<li>Lake Center,\u00a0in northeast Clay County, has been reported as closed in 1978 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/thebouncingczech\/48875502551\/\">Flickr<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/siouxcityjournal.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/lake-center-consolidated-school-remembered\/article_12c5a4f0-1be9-583e-bfed-c56413fe6ede.html\"><em>Sioux City Journal,<\/em> 3\/29\/03<\/a>). However, contemporary news stories indicate it closed a year earlier (<em>Spirit Lake Beacon<\/em>, 7\/21\/77;\u00a0<em>Milford Mail and Terril Record<\/em>, 11\/3\/77).\n<ul>\n<li>Lake Center is\u00a0northwest Iowa\u2019s equivalent to Geneseo in the \u201clarge abandoned school with gymnasium in the middle of nowhere\u201d category. It has been reported as merging with Terril in 1962 (<em>Estherville Daily News<\/em>, 6\/1\/85), but technically they did one year of what today we\u2019d call whole-grade sharing before consolidation in 1963 (<em>MMTR<\/em>, 5\/16\/63).<\/li>\n<li>In 2017, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/thebouncingczech\/24439645681\/\">wood-frame grade school behind it<\/a> was lost. The following year, what was left of the sidewalk and lawn in front were plowed up and it\u2019s now literally surrounded by cropland.<\/li>\n<li>Looking at the lines for Lake Township and its roads, did Lost Island Lake confuse the surveyors or was alcohol involved?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>La Porte City\u2019s original school was demolished in the second half of 1977 (<em>La Porte City Progress-Review<\/em>, 6\/29\/77)\n<ul>\n<li>The <em>Progress-Review<\/em> itself <a href=\"https:\/\/wcfcourier.com\/news\/local\/la-porte-city-newspaper-closes-after-127-years\/article_fe827f0e-841b-5ce2-9db1-bc18eef47fd4.html\">shut down 11 months ago<\/a> (Waterloo Courier, 11\/26\/20), leaving a town of more than 2200 without a weekly newspaper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Bristow\u2019s school closed in 1978 (<a href=\"https:\/\/educateiowa.gov\/sites\/files\/ed\/documents\/book1dec227.pdf\">IDOE archives<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Wyman\u2019s school closed in 1978 (<em>Wapello Republican<\/em>, 4\/6\/95, via\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/iagenweb.org\/louisa\/schools\/wyman-school_building.htm\">IAGenWeb<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Charlotte\u2019s school closed in 1979 (<em>De Witt Observer,<\/em> 12\/18\/78)<\/li>\n<li>Hartwick\u2019s school closed in 1979 (<em>Belle Plaine Union<\/em>, 3\/21\/79)<\/li>\n<li>Maurice\u2019s school closed in 1979 (<em>Alton Democrat<\/em>, 1\/10\/79)<\/li>\n<li>Patterson\u2019s school closed in 1979 (<em>Winterset Madisonian<\/em>, 3\/14\/79)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>UPDATE 9\/1\/21: Added Buck Creek to 1977 closures with background on Maquoketa Valley.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>July 17, 2020: &#8220;The $125,000 new school building at Lake Center is complete and will be opened next Monday to serve the oldest consolidated school district in Iowa.
