(Stories: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/2023\/05\/24\/83-iowa-churches-disaffiliate-split-united-methodist-church-lgbtq-rights-global-methodist-church\/70236426007\/\">Register<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/news\/83-iowa-churches-leave-united-methodist-in-growing-divide\/\">Gazette<\/a><\/em>) The action is part of a slow-motion schism over gay rights that the COVID pandemic has made extra messy.<\/p>\n<p>The Garwin, Geneseo, and Gladbrook churches are among those that are leaving, effective June 30. They are part of a cluster that spreads west to Owasa and Laurel.\u00a0There are also clusters in Linn County and the Mahaska-Keokuk county area, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/2023\/05\/24\/here-are-the-83-iowa-churches-ending-affiliation-united-methodist-church-lgbtq-rights\/70248402007\/\">the map spreads from Doon to southern Lee County<\/a>. The 83 churches leaving are only 11% of the total in the Iowa Conference, but many of them are the only United Methodist church in town. <a href=\"https:\/\/iaumc-email.brtapp.com\/files\/fileslibrary\/communications_lizwinders\/*2023\/ac2023\/june+disaffiliation+agreements\/p14+buckingham%2c+geneseo+umc+disag+agree+sign+04.21.23.pdf\">Here&#8217;s the disaffiliation agreement for Geneseo.<\/a> The others are the same except for names and signatures.<\/p>\n<p>The schism was supposed to be voted on at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/01\/04\/793614135\/united-methodist-church-announces-proposal-to-split-over-gay-marriage\">UMC General Conference in May 2020<\/a>. It didn&#8217;t happen, because 2020 happened. Instead, churches that wish to leave are doing so under a plan from 2019 that expires at the end of this year.
