{"id":16394,"date":"2026-09-09T10:07:47","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T15:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=16394"},"modified":"2026-09-09T01:45:23","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T06:45:23","slug":"new-lansing-bridge-to-open-early","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2026\/09\/new-lansing-bridge-to-open-early\/","title":{"rendered":"New Lansing bridge to open early"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Black Hawk Bridge&#8217;s replacement in Lansing is now expected to open in &#8220;early November,&#8221; rather than in 2027, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/iowadot.gov\/news\/2026-09-03\/iowa-and-wisconsin-announce-early-november-opening-iowa-9-wis-82-mississippi-river-crossing-lansing\">press release from the Iowa DOT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The press release uses the phrase &#8220;Mississippi River Crossing at Lansing&#8221; instead of any other title. This makes me wonder if a new name has not been agreed upon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/betweentworivers.substack.com\/p\/old-fort-madison-and-black-hawks\">Chief Black Hawk has extensive connections<\/a> to Iowa and Wisconsin history, especially in that area, where the Black Hawk War was fought. There is no reason not to name the new structure &#8220;the new Black Hawk Bridge,&#8221; and it would provide continuity in the same way the construction evokes the original design.<\/p>\n<p>The dedication of the original bridge in 1931 was a four-day festival. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/news\/local\/lansing-bridge-slated-to-open-in-november\/article_006c4491-d84f-4cbe-91db-593675047cc7.html\">An article in the Cedar Rapids <em>Gazette<\/em> on Monday<\/a> quoted Lansing Mayor Michael Verdon as saying there will be &#8220;a relatively small celebration&#8221; in November, and \u201cWhen the bridge is finally completed in the spring we will have a big celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Either way, I really need the date(s) ASAP, if I have any chance of attending.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Black Hawk Bridge&#8217;s replacement in Lansing is now expected to open in &#8220;early November,&#8221; rather than in 2027, according to a press release from the Iowa DOT.
