{"id":5790,"date":"2015-02-10T10:17:02","date_gmt":"2015-02-10T16:17:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=5790"},"modified":"2015-02-10T17:51:20","modified_gmt":"2015-02-10T23:51:20","slug":"gladbrook-school-in-danger-of-closing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2015\/02\/gladbrook-school-in-danger-of-closing\/","title":{"rendered":"Gladbrook school in danger of closing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wcfcourier.com\/news\/local\/education\/gladbrook-reinbeck-school-board-mulls-closing-one-of-the-district\/article_a37b4953-1bd1-5958-8081-dd06ac3d35ef.html\">Gladbrook-Reinbeck is considering reducing its school facilities<\/a>, and closing the K-8 building in Gladbrook is one option, reports the <em>Waterloo Courier. <\/em>The others involve rearranging grades between the two towns but all put all of a grade&#8217;s students in one place.<\/p>\n<p>With just under 600 students this year, G-R is about\u00a0<em>the<\/em> median-sized district in the state \u2014 but that&#8217;s 100 fewer than in 2008, and 250 fewer than in 2000. Gladbrook&#8217;s foray above the 1000-population threshold ended before the 2010 census.<\/p>\n<p>A school closure would be the first in Tama County since South Tama brought elementary classes <a href=\"http:\/\/iseablog.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/brand-new-building-for-south-tama.html\">to a new building southwest of the high school<\/a>\u00a0in 2006 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kwwl.com\/story\/8190213\/south-tama-elementary-school-in-danger-of-closing\">closed Chelsea in 2008<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My guess is the football field would remain on the northwest side of Gladbrook, by the Tama County Fairgrounds, since new locker rooms were built there\u00a0recently.<\/p>\n<p>Even closer to home, North Tama Superintendent Bob Cue wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/thegazette.com\/subject\/opinion\/guest-columnists\/underfunding-iowas-schools-will-have-catastrophic-long-lasting-effects-20150206\">guest column for the Cedar Rapids <em>Gazette <\/em><\/a>and a letter to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/opinion\/readers\/2015\/02\/08\/school-funding\/23071713\/\">The Des Moines Register<\/a> about school funding.
