It&#8217;s\u00a0the old Lyons High School on Main Avenue (Lincoln Highway\/Old US 30A before the present Lyons-Fulton Bridge was built), which has been abandoned for decades.<\/p>\n<p>But what about active buildings? Time to go exploring, and by exploring I mean spend an hour on Google Maps and use up my entire allotment of <em>Clinton Herald<\/em> articles&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Both<\/em> Buell Elementary and Horace Mann Elementary on Clinton&#8217;s north side <a href=\"http:\/\/qctimes.com\/news\/local\/former-clinton-school-buildings-attract-attention\/article_183f0841-3fe9-57f7-bce1-ade54c16e756.html\">closed in 2007<\/a>.\u00a0The St.\u00a0Irenaeus parochial school <a href=\"http:\/\/qctimes.com\/lifestyles\/announcements\/left-behind-catholic-churches-get-new-lives\/article_5bf81ae2-3303-11e0-b123-001cc4c03286.html\">(if the school part is still there)<\/a> is to the east of the latter two but isn&#8217;t active either.<\/p>\n<p>Until six months ago, Lyons Middle School was the easternmost active one, but it closed over Thanksgiving break when Clinton <a href=\"http:\/\/qctimes.com\/news\/local\/clinton-middle-school-could-be-senior-apartments\/article_6ba5c2c7-4705-5a9f-85c4-bfdfd9eebe6e.html \">merged its two middle schools into one new building.<\/a>\u00a0After that we move south into the main part of Clinton, but the Kirkwood building now hosts the Head Start program.<\/p>\n<p><del>The easternmost active school building in Iowa <em>overall<\/em> is Trinity Elementary, on US 67 near the Clinton County Courthouse, and Prince of Peace High School is the second-easternmost.<\/del>\u00a0(SEE UPDATE.) The latter (Prince of Peace) is on Fourth Street two blocks north of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clintonherald.com\/news\/breaking-ieda-awards-grant-for-roosevelt-building\/article_2cc60e3c-978b-11e4-87ff-03ff937134ee.html\">1888 Roosevelt school<\/a>, which was used as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.krosradio.com\/?p=4872\">Clinton school district&#8217;s administration building<\/a> for a few years.<\/p>\n<p>The easternmost active <em>public<\/em> school building in Iowa is Eagle Heights Elementary, back on the north side of Clinton, which opened in 2007 as the replacement for the two schools mentioned three paragraphs ago.<\/p>\n<p>(TL;DR Clinton has lots of old school buildings as the result of an aggressive construction campaign and declining enrollment.)<\/p>\n<p>(EDIT: Fixed date element.)<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE 9\/18\/17: A reader told me Trinity is no longer open. That makes Clinton Prince of Peace the easternmost active school building in Iowa. It&#8217;s also the easternmost active private school and K-12 site in Iowa.
