In the foreground is the portion of the bridge that was damaged in early August 2015 and removed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of Iowa&#8217;s most impressive but little-publicized early 20th century bridges is going to have to come down.<\/p>\n<p>The Wagon Wheel Bridge in Boone County over the Des Moines River, just upstream from the Kate Shelley High Bridges, had <a href=\"http:\/\/newsrepublican.com\/news\/local\/lots-memories-history-involving-wagon-wheel-bridge.html\">suffered a significant blow in August<\/a> when the east approach was set on fire.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, during a period of warm weather that caused springlike flooding, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcci.com\/news\/ice-jam-slamming-into-bridge-causes-major-damage\/38126138\">ice jams slammed into the bridge<\/a>, skewing the pilings and making what remained of the bridge unstable. <a href=\"http:\/\/amestrib.com\/news\/ice-jams-damage-bridge-cause-flooding-boone-county\">It&#8217;s going to have to be torn down.<\/a>\u00a0(As if we needed another reason to hate freeze-thaw cycles.)<\/p>\n<p>It was a beautiful summer day when I visited the bridge.
