(July 1, 1920-October 16, 1926)
NORTH End: IA 2/IA 17, now US 169/Nile Kinnick Dr. at Main St., Adel, Dallas County
Facing northwest (8/17/19)
At the bottom right corner is the brick Main Street going east. Future US 6 was moved three blocks south in 1931. IA 25 began at the southeast corner of one courthouse and ended at the southeast corner of another, at least as far as I can tell.
SOUTH End: IA 15/IA 24, now John Wayne Dr. at Court Ave., Winterset, Madison County
The John Wayne Birthplace Museum is a block south of the courthouse (thus, a block south of 25's south end) and around the corner from the Wayne birth house. It opened in 2015. (8/23/19)
Point of interest
IA 25 bridged the gap between two routes that were more diagonally aligned than our current setup. After finding out that the 1926 system was going to bring a bit more order to the lines of north-south highways, the Winterset Madisonian's editor thought that wasn't good enough, and wrote the following: "The road that enters the state, north of Algona, passes through Winterset, Afton and Mt. Ayr is now No. 16. Formerly it was a combination of numbers 16, 90, 17, 25, and 15. ... We believe that Iowa will make a mistake if it retains the present jumble of highway numbers. Under the system in use No. 1 or No. 99 indicates nothing. Had the roads been numbered even and odd, beginning in one corner of the state, a primary number would indicate a location as do section numbers in describing land." (March 4, 1926)
