(July 1, 1920-December 31, 1968)
WEST End (1): Mondamin, Harrison County
IA 39 was originally redundant with IA 12, something not on the 1919 map but discovered in the memo for the Great Truncation.
Facing west (5/7/06)
IA 39's independent route started two miles south of here, on Jasper Trail JUST east of IA 183 on the other side of Allen Creek (0.2 mi east), which would have been fixed when US 75 was paved in 1929. This is the modern equivalent junction.
Facing west (5/7/06)
The cross road was US 75 until it was moved onto I-29, and then IA 183 until the Second Great Decommissioning.
WEST End (2): IA 6, now IA 44 near US 30, Harrison County
Facing west on 39 (6/22/13)
This is the modern equivalent. The actual endpoint was about half a mile east on the half-section line (behind the camera), a southward extension of Quincy Trail that isn't there now.
EAST End (2)(?): IA 4, now IA 44 at 8th St./Southwest Ave.,
Harlan, Shelby County
EAST End (1): Harlan, Shelby County
The oldest route of the north-south road through Harlan used Southwest Avenue to avoid the railroad. It's possible that it remained signed with a bit of 4 along Chatburn Avenue and 6th Street to downtown. At first, when it came in on Willow, it surely was signed north about five blocks on 6th to the courthouse square. (photo 5/7/06)
