(July 1, 1920-October 16, 1926)
- In 1920, they knew it as: Between
Monmouth and Lyons, the Cedar Rapids, Maquoketa, and Clinton Road;
between Monmouth and Anamosa, a road that ran about four miles south
of that but didn't follow the Chicago and North Western Railroad as
closely (3 counties)
- We know it as: Parts of IA
64, US 61, and IA 136
- Let's get granular:
- Anamosa: Main Street,
Scott Street, and 115th Street plus extension the US 151 four-lane
goes through
- Anamosa to Maquoketa: IA
64, with the following remaining fragments: A driveway southeast of
the IA 38 junction, Pleasant Ridge Road, Boblink Road, 50th Avenue
and 47th Street in Monmouth, 34th Street and its abandoned bridge
over Pumpkin Creek, 24th Street, 174th Avenue and vacated extension
north to 173rd Avenue, 43rd Street
- Maquoketa to IA 136: Old
US 61 south of Maquoketa, entrance to Horseshoe Pond County Park
with a closed
but still-intact bridge over Prairie Creek, Main Street in
Maquoketa
- This is one of three places in the state where a number in 1920
system later had a US route of the same number.
- US 61 to Clinton: IA 136,
with the possible exception of 140th Street, 145th Street, and Z2E
in the Charlotte area. The route has a 50 mph rural speed limit for
this entire segment.
WEST End: IA 28, Anamosa, Jones County
Facing east on Main Street (6/18/15)
Scott Street at Main Street is where IA 61 (and IA 38 too) met IA 28
(future US 151), but the routes could've been signed westward through
downtown to end at either Ford Street (X61) or the courthouse. So 61
might have been courthouse-to-courthouse, or it might not. Above is Main
at Ford in the heart of downtown, three blocks east of the courthouse
and five blocks west of Scott.
EAST End: IA 6?, Clinton, Clinton County
There are two extremely likely places for this route to end: Eastbound
Main Avenue at 2nd Street, where IA 61 would have met the Lincoln
Highway in the downtown of the former independent community of Lyons, or
the Clinton County Courthouse a mile and a half south on present US 67.
