BUSINESS

NORTH End: Interchange, US 61, Lee County

Facing north on Business 61 (6/1/15)

I hit Fort Madison twice in 2015, which allowed me one trip to travel the US 61 bypass for the first time and another trip to follow the Great River Road, which still uses the old route through the city.

This angled photo shows a dead-end curve that was the old northbound lanes. The bypass is far enough away from Fort Madison that the business route has about a 2-mile rural four-lane segment before getting to the city.

The Fort Madison bypass, which opened in late 2011, was the first non-interstate freeway segment in Iowa to get generic interchange signage.

SOUTH End: Interchange, US 61 and IA 2, Fort Madison, Lee County

Behind the camera is a "Jct 2" shield set, indicating the beginning of IA 2. There is no "End Business 61".

At right is old 61 and a partly new frontage road. This was taken an hour after the photos below, so the sky really cleared up.

Facing east on 2 (6/1/15)

The generic signs at the interchange do not include any mention of either Business 61 or IA 2.
