(July 1, 1920-December 31, 1968)
NORTHWEST End: Wellman, Washington County
In 1931, nearly the entire route of IA 81 changed. With the extension of IA 22 across the vast majority of its present route, IA 81 was no longer a spur but intersected a state highway in Wellman. (Initially, from its intersection with 81, 22 ran north on 8th Avenue and east on 13th Street.) IA 81 was also changed to go nearly straight south to IA 92 near West Chester.
Some time after World War II but before being renumbered IA 114, 81 was removed from downtown Wellman, seen above, and moved a block west. The old route still shows up as the main one on Google Maps today. However, 8th Avenue downtown is one-way (and downhill). (10/3/18)
SOUTHEAST End: IA 11, now G20 at IA 1, Washington County
As discussed above, a major change in 1931 removed nearly all the original route from the state system. However, its linear descendant, IA 114, remained on the 1981 state map, so I have a page on the main site for that route.
