NORTH End: Interchange, US 20/71, Early, Sac County
Facing north on 471 (8/8/16)
IA 471, created in 2016, is the highest non-900 signed number ever designated in Iowa. The number is meant to be related to US 71, since it is a former segment of that route, although 171, 271, and 371 were all available. If I had been consulted, I would have favored an extension of IA 39 from Odebolt, since a very long time ago the route between Denison and Storm Lake had a single number — although that first IA 4 used IA 39, M43, and IA 110.
The portion of IA 471 between Early and old US 20 had been part of US 71 since its beginning; the southern two-thirds had been part of 71 for 80 years.

In this setup we can compare the new design, or at least one version of it, with the until-now standard style for three-digit Iowa highways.
