BUSINESS

Pictures of the west end work west, past the interchange, and then turn around. (map 1/26/03)

WEST End: Interchange, IA 163 and G28, Pella, Marion County

Facing west on Business 163 (5/31/05)

No, you're not seeing triplicate: These signs are just before an intersection of Business 163 and a piece of old 163 on the northwest side of the interchange. This is a common theme not only at this interchange, but at others along 163: Where an arrow would typically be ahead-and-turn, such as the West 163 in this case, instead it is merely a straight-ahead arrow and then the standard turn just before you get there.

Note the pair of straight-ahead arrows in the background; as I mentioned above, one here should be an ahead-and-right.

Jason Hancock's picture of this intersection in 2002 showed a farm field on the other side of the on/off ramps. Today, there are businesses on the left side of the main road and planned development on the right.

The odd 163 font and lack of white border are also on shields along the business route. The light-colored car is on a road that connects to old 163.

Business 163 is signed in both directions at this interchange. The DOT makes up for this by not mentioning it at the other end at all.

The old alignment of 163 was straight ahead, and you can see the ground sculpted as such. That was removed in freeway construction.

Business 163 is the first right turn. A "Pella ->" sign is for it, made redundant by the interchange-standard LGS near it (below).

A left turn puts you on Business 163.
