Special to this page: It took half an hour to go the 10 miles south of AZ 387. Traffic was down to one lane just north of I-8 because of a car crash a week earlier that caused a fire so hot it melted the asphalt. The crash, which killed an Iowan, happened during a dust storm (or "haboob") that was the desert portion of the same weather system that dumped two feet of snow on Flagstaff.

This page also contains my first photos of I-8 and I-19. They were two of the last four 2dis west of the Mississippi that I had never traveled.

The state capitol - a skyscraper, but not quite as bad as Florida.

A transportation exhibit in the capitol displayed highway projects and traffic projections through 2050. Note the green line for a Phoenix-Las Vegas interstate.

Ten years ago, one of our first vacations with a digital camera included a picture here, the old House.

The Arizona House and Senate are in separate buildings.

While also from the 1960s, Arizona's legislative buildings aren't quite as dated as North Carolina's.

Through much pleading, I convinced Mom and Dad to go to Tucson.

If we'd known/remembered that the crash was tying up traffic, I would've sent us south through Casa Grande.

First time I've passed the end of, and taken pictures of, I-8.

"Phoenix Bypass Route" using I-8 and AZ 85 to return to I-10.

I got one exit on I-19. Better make these pictures count.
