WEST End: Oak St., Henderson, Mills County

Facing west, but heading east, on 244 (8/23/19)

This is on Maple Street, west of Oak, looking toward Henderson's one-block downtown. On the left is a park and the fire station. The building with the awning on the right was the post office in 2006, but the post office was gone by 2014.

IA 244 shared a trait with IA 383: Both ends face in the same cardinal direction. However, 244 didn't start out like that. It started out going straight north from Henderson, across the raiload tracks, to the intersection of H12 and 395th Street. That was where IA 4, later US 59, originally turned east-to-north (or south-to-west) between Macedonia and Hastings. When the route was moved eastward, 244 became a spur running north then east. A large curve north of town was removed in the 1980s.

The two spurs seen here, IA 244 and 362, would not be officially dropped until the second half of 1980, and the 1981 state map has BOTH the original and second versions marked. The route number was transferred to the road between Neola and I-80.
