BUSINESS

NORTH End: Stoplight, US 61, Muscatine, Muscatine County

Historical maps of the Muscatine area can be seen here. There are a LOT of before-and-after pairs on this page and I hope the pattern is clear to understand. Going around the intersection clockwise from bottom:

Throughout Business 61's route in Muscatine, there is a state highway assigned to it as well. Now that IA 92 has been rerouted, only the portion of Business 61 from the north end to the Mississippi River bridge has a state highway with it.

Facing west, but heading south, on 61 (8/31/07, 8/31/07, and 6/8/15)

This probably provides the best comparison of what Iowa mileage signs used to look like before a decade of Clearview and what they look like now and in the future. The kerning (space between letters) is definitely different, and the "s" is skinnier.

From this intersection, 22 and 38 also head south until 22 heads east, regaining its route before it was shifted onto the US 61 bypass. Then 38 is co-signed with 92 until the intersection at the bridge, where 38 ends.

The brackets and jumbo shields make this arrangement, which conforms to new standards, particularly ungainly.

This pole could have been "End 38" in the 1970s and early 1980s.

This is the only place in Iowa where three state highways are on the same road.

At this intersection, IA 92 has just entered Iowa and is at the foot of its bridge. IA 38 continues to be signed down to end here even after the reroute of IA 92.

Signs were changed after IA 92 was taken off Grandview Avenue/Mississippi Drive and rerouted around Muscatine in 2014, ending state jurisdiction over a road that had been part of the Iowa highway system since its beginning. Business 61 remains signed along the route.

With this angle, you can see the larger shields posted along the Muscatine bypass with IA 92's reroute, but you can't get a real sense of scale.

I think this is the same sign in Jason's picture, mounted on different posts.

Have I mentioned I do not like the font and size mismatches?

Notice the lack of directions above the two routes at left and inclusion of the Hiawatha Pioneer Trail sign, which the state stopped keeping in 2008.
