In the same weekend that we will celebrate the completion of four-lane US 20 across Iowa, a different part of US 20 history will be shutting down.
The Boondocks Cafe, truck stop and motel, which opened June 5, 1973, will close for good Oct. 20. (Stories with autoplay warnings: WOI, KCCI) It was a highway haven long before the big truck stop chains made their way into Iowa. I-35 ended at the interchange with old 20 from 1967 to 1975, making the location a prime spot for business. But for a few years now it’s had competition from a Flying J on the other side of the freeway, and sit-down cafes don’t have the allure they once did.
