A construction project on Hess Road and La Porte Road on the south side of Waterloo started last week. The plan dates back to 2020 (large slideshow PDF here). It starts with a new roundabout at Hess and Shaulis roads and continues north to where La Porte Road runs into present US 218.
This continuous strip of road has two names because the La Porte Road segment is old 218 on the west side of the freeway. The name switchover point is at Grimm Street on the east side of Crossroads Mall. Old 218 on the east side of the freeway is the asphalt part of Texas Street.
I can’t say that the current asphalt on La Porte Road dates back to its days as US 218, perhaps an overlay as I-380 was completed in 1984, but it certainly hasn’t been touched in 30 years.
