Google Street View goes to the Grand Canyon
So Google can go through a national park on foot but has yet to cover anything in Tama County beyond signed highways. (And there are state highways in southeast Missouri that haven’t been covered yet either!)

Sioux City historical map series changes
While looking through old aerial photos of Sioux City I noticed two very little changes to its alignment that I hadn’t included in my map series. (In fact, if I didn’t make this post I doubt they’d be seen at … Continue reading

The map of “Revolution”
I just caught up to episode 5 of the NBC show “Revolution,” about a postapocalyptic world without electricity. The show finally got around to acknowledging the existence of steam power, which based on character reactions somehow managed to avoid being … Continue reading

We might have seen one or two of them
Iowa TV markets rank Nos. 4, 6, and 7 for political ad saturation. On a semi-related note, President Obama’s cross-state trip this week will get him coverage in four of Iowa’s seven media markets (five if KTVO covers him in … Continue reading

College conferences and House apportionment
(This is long and deals with the intersection of geography and football. You have been warned.) When Iowa State was on the verge of falling into athletics oblivion a year ago (again), I wrote in The Des Moines Register about … Continue reading

No bikes allowed
The segment of US 65 between IA 2 and Lineville on the 2012 Iowa Map for Bicyclists (PDF) doesn’t appear on the map at all. The map is color-coded with traffic counts — purple is the lowest, fewer than 700 vehicles … Continue reading
