Sioux City to tear down Crescent Park school

Sioux City’s Crescent Park Elementary School, which from a certain point of view closed twice, will be demolished by the end of the year, the Sioux City Journal reported last month.

A final public walkthrough of the building was held in February, and KTIV has video. KMEG has some exterior footage (but, like all Sinclair websites, doesn’t work in Safari for some reason).

The materials around and in the building say Hunt Elementary because Sioux City has been doing an interesting little dance with its old schools as it constructs new ones. The Crescent Park school originally closed in 2016 when students from it and two other elementaries were combined into Perry Creek Elementary, the Journal said in October. (See also this KCAU story from May 2016.) Then it hosted Bryant Elementary, and then Hunt Elementary, students while replacements of those buildings were underway.

The February Journal article said Crescent Park, built in 1920, was “by far the oldest school building in the district.” This is a significant change from the turn of the 21st Century, when Sioux City had multiple active buildings from the end of the 19th Century.
