The other I-480

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
October 1, 2013: A grammatically incorrect “Ends 480” in northeastern Ohio sign is placed just south of the Ohio Turnpike, but drivers must exit and travel a short connector to reach I-80.

It’s not possible to travel the entire distance of Interstate 480 in Ohio without paying for it — at least, if you want a full clinch according to the Clinched Highway Mapping website.

Although there are four-lane roads that continue from almost either end of the interstate, you have to get on/off the Ohio Turnpike to see I-480’s start/end points. On the west end, it’s a true partial interchange (off I-80 eastbound, onto I-80 westbound) with a nearby merge/split from the OH 10 freeway just to the east. On the east end, as seen above, OH 14 continues but I-480 travelers must use a short connector that includes the toll plaza. (The “Ends” may be good enough for the layman, but not the roadgeek.)

Ohio and Iowa-Nebraska have the only I-480 interstates in the country. The one in Ohio is the longest child route of I-80 east of the Mississippi River. It skirts the very southernmost part of official Cleveland city limits while I-80 stays far away. It also has a secret spur, not signed on maps or BGSs, officially called “I-480N” that connects to I-271.

Cyclones.tv and aspect ratios

Because I am a Mediacom subscriber, at the beginning of football season I started receiving Cyclones.tv with my cable package. I do not have HD cable. For multiple cable networks, including sports and news channels, that have widescreen broadcasts, the area is shrunk down to fit inside a 4:3 window, with black bars at the top and bottom. This does not happen with Cyclones.tv. In addition, when an old standard-definition broadcast is shown there, the vertical sidebars added for widescreen ALSO appear, still pushing a 16:9 picture into a 4:3 box.

Here’s an illustration.

cytvwv1

This is the way a rebroadcast of the Fox Sports 1 game between Iowa State and West Virginia appears on the Cyclones.tv screen. It might look OK at first glance, but the display is wrong. Notice the skinny FS1 logo in the upper right corner.

If you take that picture, increase the width but not the height to 133%, and re-scale it proportionally back to the same width, it looks like this:

cytvwv3

Add black bars to the top and bottom and it looks better, although smaller.

But here’s the question: Is the incorrect aspect ratio a Cyclones.TV issue, or a Mediacom issue? Where along the line should the picture be shrunk instead of squeezed when transmitted to non-HD subscribers?

US 63 reroute in Rochester set for 2014

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
July 17, 2013: This is where US 63 will join/leave US 52, eventually. County Road 14 connecting 52 and 63 is still rural, for now.

Although there were previous reports that Rochester MN had accepted the transfer of US 63 through the city, the signs had not changed when I went through in the summer.

After e-mailing the Minnesota DOT, I learned that sign replacement will be a big project next spring/summer. Not only do BGSs along US 52 have to be replaced (see above), every interchange needs US 63 shields added to the signage on the intersecting roads.

My clinch of US 63 in Minnesota is still good for a while, at least. But some time I’ll have to travel it again.

Two basketball schools in the Big 12

Iowa State is judged to be one of them, at least when it’s only football vs. basketball. Iowa, meanwhile, is a “push” because the answer is wrestling, and Minnesota is a push because the answer is hockey.

And while I’m looking at Sports on Earth, this piece about Missouri football is worth a read too. Hey, it’s not (entirely) the ESPN graphics guy’s fault that the school decided on a big branding push that misspells the state’s name.

Toledo Chronicle article on US 30 expressway

With pictures.

The most interesting part of the article is that the DOT says building a completely new four-lane, rather than twinning the existing road, would make for a four-year project instead of seven. It would also cost more to rebuild the current two-lane, which I suspect is because it would still require ripping up the road because the construction standards are so different now.

New IA 86 photos, and some from July 2012

Michael Ehret took some photos of IA 86’s new alignment at the state line. One I ran on the blog earlier.

There are also some older photos that I’ve finally gotten around to placing, with former IA 91, former IA 403, and Business 60 Sheldon. There are also a few related to the new end of IA 163 at the Mississippi River, but I left the heavy lifting for that to the US 34 page.

Blog posts will resume after the weekend.

NBC apologizes to Tracy, Iowa. Sort of.

A simple side remark about the name “Tracy” apparently didn’t go over well with the Internet. It probably takes more time to explain than the occurrence itself. The video from Wednesday is here, if you can tolerate a 15- or 30-second ad for a 1-minute clip.

West Virginia is 34th state for ISU FB

In September 1895, the Iowa State College football team boarded a train for its first game outside the state of Iowa, a matchup with Butte Athletic Club in Montana. The team lost. Later in the month it played its first “real” college football team out of state, Northwestern in Evanston, a 36-0 win — the game that gave the Cyclones their nickname.

Since then, the Cyclones have played football games in 33 states including Iowa. The most recent additions were Connecticut in 2011 and Idaho in 2002. When the Cyclones play in Morgantown on Saturday, that will make West Virginia the 35th state, and one that will be returned to every other year for conference games.

For comparison, the Iowa Hawkeyes have played in 24 states plus DC. Next year’s game at Maryland will add that state to the list.

The closest state to Iowa that the Cyclones haven’t played in is Indiana — which is the Hawkeyes’ third-most played-in state behind Iowa and Illinois.

Fox Sports’ website breaks what didn’t need fixing

Fox Sports had the easiest place to catch up on non-live college football scores. One page had nothing but the week’s scores, in a simple text format, listing which team was the home team.

Until now.

Welcome to the all-new FOXSports.com (Nov. 20)

Things look a bit different. New layout. New scoring products. New device look and feel. All wrapped in a fully responsive architecture that puts mobile at the heart of our design. … Everything filters through a mobile-first lens.

I don’t WANT something that “puts mobile at the heart of design.” I am on a computer. I want a WEBSITE. I don’t want gobs of pictures with few links visible at any given time.

How in the world does dividing up the scores into Top 25 or conferences-only, in a layout that takes up more space and graphics and code per item, more user-friendly? For any device?

Web designers, please stop sacrificing desktop usability for a “mobile experience”.

Reconstructed IA 86 now open

NewBegin86

This photo from Chris Ehret shows new IA 86 at the Minnesota state line. If “Dickinson County” had been white on green and on the top of the pole, it would look like an older style county sign, but this is nonstandard. The highway opened Thursday.

The road was rebuilt from IA 9 northward, something that had not been done since the state originally took over an existing county road in the early 1980s. It is now a major corridor from the Iowa Great Lakes to I-90.

Instead of two quick, sharp curves at the Minnesota border, the road now gradually angles northward from a mile south of the line. (This means I have to go back and re-travel it. Ack!)

KTIV has a short story and pictures of the new road, including a distance sign to I-90. This is, to the best of my knowledge, the second appearance of I-90 on a mileage sign in Iowa.
