Creston, Prescott merger talks advance

The Creston News-Advertiser says that a consolidation vote with Prescott will be in April assuming petitions are gathered and the AEA approves. It’s a merger in name only, as the reality is the Prescott school will close and be a district without students in 2015-16 and the Creston district will continue.

That one weird Texas Tech statistic

(Clickbait headline alert!)

A geographic note in the Iowa State-Texas Tech game appears to have been misconstrued. During the game Saturday, a Fox Sports graphic (possibly running off this AP game preview) indicated that Tech has only played four “November games north of Oklahoma” before this one. The four: At Missouri, 2011 (L); at Boston College, 1962 (L); at Creighton, 1942 (L); and at Wake Forest, 1941 (W).

Wake Forest is not north of Oklahoma. It is due east. Wake’s stadium, located about 36°7’44” N, is barely north of Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, 36°7’29” N, and Razorback Stadium, 36°4’5″ N. Texas Tech has won in Stillwater in November twice. If the graphic had said “north of Oklahoma State” or “north of Stillwater”, it would have been correct.

So to clarify, Saturday’s win in Ames is indeed the first time Texas Tech has won a game north of the state of Oklahoma in November, out of four games total.

Remsen-Union, MMC call off whole-grade sharing

These articles from the Le Mars Sentinel and Sioux City Journal point to the same difficulty: The Remsen-Union and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn boards could not agree on which town would get (and who would lose) the high school. Both articles also say the MMC elementary in Cleghorn will close, which likely would have happened regardless. Both districts are facing steep and practically immediate budget cuts as a result.

The inability to come to a mutual decision is neither unexpected nor petty. Remsen doesn’t want to be one of the highest-population non-suburbs in Iowa without a high school, which was the way the wind was blowing. Cases like this, where each district has a decently-sized (for Iowa) population center, are bound to occur more and more often.

I-35 rest areas nearing completion

This story from WHO says that new rest areas between Des Moines and Ames should be finished in the next couple of months. They will be between the US 30 and IA 210 exits, replacing ones taken out for the Ankeny interchange. That is also one of the longest stretches of Iowa interstate without an exit, along with a 9-mile segment of I-29 in western Iowa.

Class A football championship today

This afternoon, Gladbrook-Reinbeck plays Logan-Magnolia for the Iowa Class A football title. If you miss watching a power running game from the I-formation or the wishbone offense with ten players in a three-point stance, this is the game for you. (On the defensive side, GR stopped Denver’s opening drive at the 1 last week.)

The championship games are Thursday-Friday this year because UNI has a home game Saturday, although there could have been games Saturday morning. I don’t know why the UNI-Dome won’t host any games before the semifinals anymore, but it may be a cost thing.

If you want a playoff shirt, you might be disappointed: This year there is only one color (white on black) and only the semifinalists from each class are listed. It’s hard to list 192 districts on one shirt. (Another casualty of expanded playoffs.)

UPDATE: Logan-Magnolia 28, Gladbrook-Reinbeck 24. Also, Newell-Fonda 39, Fremont-Mills 35.

Benton closes elementary, East Marshall doesn’t

There was a reversal of expectations in Gilman Monday night, as East Marshall’s school board voted to keep both the K-4 building in Laurel and 5-8 building in Gilman open.

However, the Benton Community school board did proceed as expected, voting to close the (separate) Van Horne Elementary and redistribute those students to other sites.

Counting a Catholic elementary in Worthington, Iowa has had three announced school closures this month alone.

Nebraska schools considering five-way merger

This story from the Norfolk Daily News is interesting and shows that Nebraska suffers the same problems with declining rural schools, only more so. The five towns involved are about 75 miles west of Sioux City.

What did Iowa do to you, Agents of SHIELD?

First scene in last week’s episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”:

“What’s Burning Man?”

“Are you sure you’re not from Iowa, because you just sounded like it.”

Later it turns out the person who spoke the second line was “an art teacher from Iowa.” I’m not sure if that makes it better or worse.

Iowa has a history of being name-dropped in superhero/spy TV shows, from “Kim Possible” a decade ago to “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” a half-century ago, both of which put secret bases in the state. In that light, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” needs to step up its game.

A moment of sanity in playoff nomenclature

The NCAA has relented on its attempts to manipulate the style of the rounds of 64 and 32 in the men’s tournament. The first and second rounds WILL BE the first and second rounds starting in 2016.

Not only that, but some of those first- and second-round games will be held in Des Moines for the first time in men’s tournament history in 2016.

The end of Iowa Highway 370

October 22, 2014: So what do we do with these brand-new signs now? Put H10 markers in the IA 370 spots, I hope.

At some point during the past week, IA 370 was decommissioned in Mills County. The state-maintained connection between I-29 and the Missouri River toll bridge is not vital after the new US 34 bridge opened not quite a month ago. This had been a foreordained conclusion, with the transfer-of-jurisdiction vote back in January 2010 (PDF).

The decommissioning of Iowa’s second-highest numbered and signed state highway leaves four 300-number routes. For the time being, NE 370 still exists all the way to the river, and remains a high-numbered anomaly in that state.

Dan Drackley spotted the change in signs.
